In a major step toward promoting sustainable mobility, Kumari Bank Limited and GIZ Nepal (Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit GmbH) have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) under the Sustainable Electric Transport for Nepal (SET4NPL) project.
The collaboration aims to establish a dedicated financial mechanism and digital innovation framework to accelerate the adoption of electric public transport, particularly electric micro- and mini-buses (EMBs), by improving access to affordable financing for Public Transport Operators (PTOs).

Through SET4NPL, several digital components—including mobile applications, GPS devices, LED route displays, and open-loop e-ticketing systems—will be introduced to make public transportation more efficient, transparent, and user-friendly.
The SET4NPL project is a joint initiative of GIZ Nepal and the Global Green Growth Institute (GGGI), implemented in coordination with the Ministry of Physical Infrastructure and Transport (MoPIT) and other key partners. Funded by the Mitigation Action Facility (MAF), the program aims to facilitate the deployment of around 3,500 electric minibuses, supporting Nepal’s transition toward a cleaner and more sustainable transport system.
Under the partnership, PTOs will receive subsidies and tailored loan packages from Kumari Bank to ease the purchase of EMBs. These financial tools are designed to reduce initial capital requirements and enhance the affordability and long-term financial viability of electric transport operations. By lowering equity thresholds and operational costs, the initiative seeks to make electric mobility both accessible and economically sustainable for transport entrepreneurs nationwide.
Kumari Bank, one of Nepal’s leading commercial banks, brings to the project its extensive network of 302 branches, 50 extension counters, and 48 branchless units across the country. Supported by the FINACLE Core Banking System, the Bank provides a full range of digital banking services, including Internet and Mobile Banking, Visa Debit/Credit Cards, and a network of 317 ATMs and over 1,100 POS terminals.
With a strong focus on innovation, transparency, and good governance, Kumari Bank continues to play a pivotal role in supporting Nepal’s transition toward clean, smart, and sustainable transport solutions.
