On a brisk Friday morning in early September, a fleet of sleek, light blue vehicles moved quietly past the Amiri Diwanthe seat of governance in Doha, Qatarcatching little attention from passersby who likely assumed they were just ordinary cars. But for Pony.ai, the scene marked a milestone: the official launch of its robotaxi testing program in Qatar.

The leading Chinese autonomous driving company has partnered with Mowasalat, Qatar’s national transport operator, to advance the development and deployment of self-driving vehicles in the country. The collaboration follows Pony.ai’s earlier partnership with Dubai’s Roads and Transport Authority, with robotaxi trials in the United Arab Emirates expected to begin later this year. Commercial driverless operations are slated to launch in 2026.

Pony.ai’s expansion is part of a broader trend of Chinese autonomous vehicle companies rapidly pushing beyond domestic borders to establish a global footprint.

WeRide Hits the Road in Singapore

Another Chinese AV player, WeRide, announced in early September that it will begin deploying its robotaxis in Singapore later this year, in collaboration with a local mobility services provider. This comes on the heels of the launch of its robobus service on Sentosa Island in July.

The robobus operates on a 1.2-kilometer fixed loop, running every 12 minutes and connecting three hotels with the T Galleria shopping mall. Equipped with 360-degree vision and the ability to detect obstacles over 200 meters away, the vehicle exemplifies the company’s efforts to integrate autonomous transport into daily life.

In addition to passenger transport, WeRide has ventured into smart sanitation. Since late 2024, its robosweepers have been operating along Marina Coastal Drive and the Esplanade in Singapore, forming part of the country’s first commercial autonomous cleaning initiative.

Strategic Global Alliances on the Rise

Chinese AV firms are increasingly turning to strategic partnerships with global mobility platforms to accelerate adoption. During IAA Mobility 2025 in Munich, Chinese AV startup Momenta, backed by Mercedes-Benz and SAIC, announced a partnership with Uber to roll out robotaxi services in Germany starting in 2026.

Initial deployments will include safety operators onboard. “This partnership completes a critical piece of our global scaling puzzle,” said Cao Xudong, founder and CEO of Momenta.

Uber CEO Dara Khosrowshahi praised the collaboration as a key step toward offering “more reliable and affordable autonomous mobility” to users worldwide.

Toyota-backed Pony.ai is also partnering with Uber, with plans to launch its service in a key Middle Eastern market later this year. The company aims to expand to additional international locations as infrastructure and regulations permit.

Meanwhile, WeRide is strengthening its existing partnership with Uber by extending operations to 15 new cities outside China and the United States over the next five years. The two firms began collaborating in September 2024 and launched commercial robotaxi services in Abu Dhabi last December. The fleet there is expected to reach 50 vehicles by mid-2025.

“We are taking this partnership to a new level,” said Tony Han, founder and CEO of WeRide. “This reflects our joint ambition to make autonomous mobility accessible and affordable across the globe.”

The Road Ahead

As Chinese AV companies continue to expand internationally, they are not only introducing next-generation technologies but also reshaping the competitive landscape of urban mobility. From the streets of Doha and Singapore to the avenues of Munich and Abu Dhabi, autonomous driving is slowly shifting from vision to reality-one robotaxi at a time.
