The Koshi Province government provided a total of Rs 88.5 million in economic assistance to patients suffering from chronic illnesses during the last fiscal year (2081–82 BS). The aid supported individuals battling conditions such as cancer, kidney failure, spinal and head injuries, and sickle cell anemia.

According to Dr. Kenin Rai, Information Officer at the Ministry of Health under the provincial government, a total of 1,715 patients received financial support during the period. Based on the severity of their condition and their applications, patients were granted assistance ranging from Rs 50,000 to Rs 100,000.

Of the total recipients, 1,660 patients diagnosed with cancer, kidney-related ailments, spinal injuries, and head injuries received Rs 50,000 each. Additionally, 55 patients who had undergone kidney transplants were provided with Rs 100,000 each.
However, in the current fiscal year, the government has halted this direct financial support due to increased budgetary pressures. Instead, the Ministry has introduced a new working procedure focused on providing health insurance coverage for patients with chronic illnesses and renewing insurance policies for those already enrolled.

Previously, kidney transplant patients were eligible for up to Rs 200,000 in aid, while other chronic disease patients received Rs 100,000. Last year, the assistance amounts were halved due to limited funding and rising demand. The economic assistance programme was first launched in fiscal year 2079–80 BS.
The shift toward health insurance is aimed at creating a more sustainable model for supporting chronically ill patients in the long term, according to ministry officials.
