Leadership Insights on Global Media Challenges

In his opening address, Li Shuangwu, President and Editor-in-Chief of the Contemporary World Press, underscored the vital role of youth in advancing media integration and innovation. He urged media organizations worldwide to “build an open and mutually beneficial platform for dialogue.”

Sengthong Phasavath, Deputy Director-General of the Lao News Agency, highlighted the dual nature of digital transformation. “While it poses significant challenges, it also offers unprecedented opportunities for the revitalization of traditional media,” he stated. He emphasized that international media cooperation must be founded on shared values, with a focus on content sharing, talent development, and network building.

Liu Gang, Director-General of the Xinhua Institute, spoke on the necessity of intellectual independence and cultural self-awareness for Global South nations. He called for enhanced collaboration between media and think tanks to promote indigenous cultures, foster youth confidence, and advance a more equitable global communication landscape.

Innovative Proposals and Initiatives

Guan Hong, Vice President of the China Intercontinental Communication Center, outlined key trends shaping the future of media: story-driven content, integrated communication, and community-based operations. She proposed the creation of a content innovation network, a digital technology-sharing platform, and a youth talent pool to strengthen international communication efforts.

A notable outcome of the event was the launch of a social media initiative aimed at media professionals from neighboring countries. This program is designed to deepen understanding of China and enhance people-to-people ties.

Roundtable Discussion: Overcoming Barriers to Cooperation

During a roundtable session titled “Breaking Barriers to China-Foreign Media Cooperation Across Time and Space,” participants offered actionable insights. Vimukthi Yasas, a committee member of the Media Unit of Sri Lanka’s Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna, outlined three core principles for effective collaboration: mutual respect, shared responsibility, and a people-centered approach. “Differences should serve as a foundation for dialogue, not as barriers,” he remarked.

Supachai Siangjun, Social Media and Communication Manager of Thailand’s People’s Party, introduced a “technology-talent-mechanism” model for cooperation. He advocated for the establishment of transnational frameworks to tackle global issues such as disinformation.

Focus on Regional Challenges: Perspectives from Nepal

Mahesh Pandey, a media representative from Nepal, shed light on the specific challenges facing Nepal’s media landscape. He pointed to a decline in public trust towards traditional outlets and the rising influence of digital platforms.

“In Nepal, we face a significant challenge: public trust in media is declining day by day,” Pandey stated. “While traditional media struggles to maintain its strong presence, new technology and social media are becoming more popular and accessible. This shift presents both an obstacle and an opportunity for the future of information in our country.”

Pandey’s comments highlighted a common dilemma among media practitioners in developing nations: leveraging technological advancements while preserving credibility and relevance.

Broad Consensus on Future Directions

Representatives from leading institutions, including Xinhua News Agency, Renmin University of China, and China Newsweek, shared best practices in international communication, the pivotal role of youth, and effective digital strategies. A consensus emerged on the need to harness the innovative potential of youth in cross-cultural communication and to reinforce the role of political parties and national media in guiding public opinion and serving societal interests.
